Now, I’m not sure how many people are aware of the recent news that the long awaited ‘Snyder Cut’ of JUSTICE LEAGUE is set to release in the coming year. For those excited for this new release I’m sure that it will be a great watch for you as there has been countless posts, YouTube videos and Time Square billboards about this Nerd-varna to be shown to the public. As many people believed it was in fact a thing Warner Brothers had hidden away in a fault. Much like people believe Walt Disney’s frozen head is somewhere in Disney World.
And yes, we are now approaching the release of this ‘film’ on HBO Max, (because they know people are going to pay for yet another streaming service) but this is where the disconnect for me lies. I have many a nerdy friend in my entourage, some of them are die-hard MARVEL fans while others think that those movies are ridiculous while DC’s outings are classic cinema. Which is a ridiculous mentality to have as they’re both film franchises involving what would be the 21st Century Mythology is it wasn’t for the fact we know they don’t exist.
A handful of these DC fans that I’m in contact with have told me that since we’re finally going to get Zac Snyder’s original intention for the film it will show the fact that it is in fact the greatest Superhero film. Again, it is ridiculous to make such a claim since on the internet there will be countless arguments over which of the abundance in existence are actually the best. But also, this cut of the film is not going to be what was originally intended to be, since as reports about it are coming forward all corners of the World Wide Web, it will be somewhere between Four and Six hours long.
I don’t need to tell you that if a director showed up on day one and said, ‘I want a Five hour movie in the cinemas.’ They would have been laughed out of the room as quickly as they had entered. Even Tarantino wouldn’t have been able to swing it, with his extended cut of Hateful Eight being released episodically on NETFLIX. Because there are very few people who enjoy sitting through a film pushing the Three hour mark, let alone something like Five.
The other point to why this isn’t the original intention for JUSTICE LEAGUE is simply because it would be an idiotic move to do the original plan. Since the films initial release the internet has been filled with fan queries, questions, re-writes and explanations fans have put in themselves. If a director wants the film to do well and doesn’t take any of these millions of fan-edits into account, at least in part, then you’ll have something similar to the redos of the original trilogy of STAR WARS. Snyder is in a very unique position as he is already hailed as the films savour before its release, before its announcement even.
PERSONAL OPINION WARNING:
If BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (ULTIMATE EDITION) is anything to go by with Snyder having full creative control over the caped crusader and buds, then personally I don’t think a Five hour edition of an already boring movie will do it any favours. If anything will come off as nothing more than self-indulgent.
If people don’t agree with the previous paragraph then fair enough, that’s what having different opinions is like.
I will be sitting down to watch this new edition to extensive run-time cinema upon its release. And I hope it lives up the expectations held by those who have been working hard on their keyboards to get this film released. We will have to wait and see, yet only two things are true if this film is in fact between Four and Six hours long:
A. This is not the original intention for the film when it was original made.
B. We will have yet another fanboy war on our hands where endless people compare this to Avengers.
