Now, the wondrous world of Middle Earth is something that most people who are living today will thankfully have some sort of knowledge of. With the fellowship of heroes travelling from the Shire to Mordor to fight against evil in a mighty battle, to then have it all unravelled by the forced trilogy of Hobbit films. But that is a different matter that might be another post one day, for now it is to talk about the bravest of the fellowship, the one member who above all the mission of defeating Sauron would have been impossible without him. And that member is the one and only, Samwise Gamgee.
Everybody needs a Samwise in their life, the most loyal and trustworthy friend anyone could hope to wish for in their life. The only person who is able to ask to hold the one ring but not to feel its power but instead because he wants nothing more than to help his friend deal with the task he’s been challenged with. He even momentarily has the ring in his possession and when asked for it back by Frodo he hands it over, with the only hesitation could be argued that he is concerned with what it’s doing to his friend.
He was the only one to think Gollum was no good for the mission, even though he did guide them through a lot Sam never let Gollum out of his sight. Now, the fellowship has a lot of brave heroes that decided to go along with this mission, but from the very start the only one to be involved even though they were told multiple times to head back home. Even Merry and Pippin aren’t told to go home as much and they fall into the adventure more than choose to start it.
Continuing on, the end of fellowship has Samwise running into the river after Frodo, even though he’s unable to swim because he knows that if he doesn’t at least try to go with his childhood friend then he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. Then in Two Towers, Faramir only lets Sam and Frodo continue on their mission alone when he overhears Sam’s speech to Frodo. Then, there’s the times Sam spoke to him, one on one, to remind him of home and to keep Frodo from drifting too far. Creating a plausible argument, that without Sam then Frodo would have given his will to the ring.
And of course, the end of their mission, the last few steps that they need to complete their long mission that had taken up about 11 hours of film to get to this point and its Sam that has the strength to finish it. And then Samwise Gamgee says the words that I hope we all know; “I can’t carry it for you. But I can carry you!” Literal chills every time I watch The Return of the King. All that it comes down to is the fact that without Samwise Gamgee then Middle Earth would have lost their fight and the likes of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli probably would’ve lost their lives. I’d include Gandalf in that group but I’m not sure he can die especially after he took a sky dive in a cave with a Bal
