Violent Video Games

Now, violent video games always get brought up during the terrible events of a shooting, commonly in America and sadly commonly in a school. Part of the argument is that children shouldn’t be playing games such as Call of Duty or GTA, and in all honesty, they’re partly right. Not that they are to blame for the horrific events but that children shouldn’t be playing them.

But people then say how the video games shouldn’t be made because of the effect it has on their children. This is where I disagree, it’s not at fault of the video game for children playing them too young, its whoever buys the child the game. Essentially, its like giving a toddler a kitchen knife and then when that inevitably goes wrong turning around to the company that made the knife and blaming them for making it too sharp.

And I know the argument of how if they don’t play the game at home then they’ll just play it when they are around someone else’s house or that they’ll moan and cry until it gets bought for them. It’s not a reason to blame the company either. When was the last time you saw someone complain an 18 rated film wasn’t child-friendly enough or complaining that they should make a beer for children? But with a video game its treated like these 18 rated games are made for kids when they’re not. The rating is there for a reason.

Yes, some teenagers are mature enough to handle the content but when there’s a nine year old telling people online how he had sexual relations with someone else’s mum then I’m surprised they even have the controller. Essentially this post is just an opinion on something that will undoubtedly prop up again once it gets found out someone who got their hands on a gun was a fan of Call of Duty. But if we start to censor everything because parents can’t say no then we really do have an issue.
